Islam for the Western Mind
This book has the primary aim of explaining the intellectual
foundations of 'Islamic belief' to people familiar with the position
of religious belief in Western thought. It challenges that position
and provides the Islamic alternative. The secondary aim is to briefly
tackle some of the misperceptions common in the West as to the
teachings of Islam. If you have some concerns in this area it may be
best to read the relevant section for that aim first. The final aim is
to present some of the evidence which has persuaded people to become
Muslims.
Introduction
To discuss the position that religious belief should have in Western
thought presents certain problems. Islam has a definite set of
prescriptions on what is good thinking and hence the sort of thinking
which leads to religious belief. It is circular to argue that you
should think according to the teachings of Islam, then you will come
to accept the authority of Islam and its teachings - in particular its
teachings about ways in which you should think. In avoiding this the
arguments are presented about the sources of knowledge and about the
sins of disbelief without basing them on the authority of Islamic
teachings, although in fact this can easily be done. The arguments
also try to avoid being based on historical evidence or on opinions of
respected people since these are inevitably selective and contentious.
Instead the appeal is directly to the mind and conscience of the
reader, seeking to find common ground for building a better
understanding of Islam.

THE BLACK WAR
"The Black War of Van Diemen's Land" was the name of the official
campaign of terror directed against the Black people of Tasmania.
Between 1803 and 1830 the Black aborigines of Tasmania were reduced
from an estimated five-thousand people to less than seventy-five. An
article published December 1, 1826 in the Tasmanian Colonial Times
declared that:
"We make no pompous display of Philanthropy. The Government must
remove the natives--if not, they will be hunted down like wild beasts
and destroyed!"
With the declaration of martial law in November 1828, Whites were
authorized to kill Blacks on sight.
As early as 1804 the British began to slaughter, kidnap and enslave
the Black people of Tasmania. The colonial government itself was not
even inclined to consider the aboriginal Tasmanians as full human
beings, and scholars began to discuss civilization as a unilinear
process with White people at the top and Black people at the bottom.
To the Europeans of Tasmania the Blacks were an entity fit only to be
exploited in the most sadistic of manners--a sadism that staggers the
imagination and violates all human morality. As UCLA professor, Jared
Diamond, recorded:
"Tactics for hunting down Tasmanians included riding out on horseback
to shoot them, setting out steel traps to catch them, and putting out
poison flour where they might find and eat it. Sheperds cut off the
penis and testicles of aboriginal men, to watch the men run a few
yards before dying. At a hill christened Mount Victory, settlers
slaughtered 30 Tasmanians and threw their bodies over a cliff. One
party of police killed 70 Tasmanians and dashed out the children's
brains."
Such vile and animalistic behavior on the part of the White settlers
of Tasmania was the rule rather than the exception. In spite of their
wanton cruelty, however, punishment in Tasmania was exceedingly rare
for the Whites, although occasionally Whites were sentenced for crimes
against Blacks. For example, there is an account of a man who was
flogged for exhibiting the ears and other body parts of a Black boy
that he had mutilated alive. We hear of another European punished for
cutting off the little finger of an Aborigine and using it as a
tobacco stopper. Twenty-five lashes were stipulated for Europeans
convicted of tying aboriginal "Tasmanian women to logs and burning
them with firebrands, or forcing a woman to wear the head of her
freshly murdered husband on a string around her neck."
Not a single European, however, was ever punished for the murder of
Tasmanian Aborigines. Europeans thought nothing of tying Black men to
trees and using them for target practice. Black women were kidnapped,
chained and exploited as sexual slaves. White convicts regularly
hunted Black people for sport, casually shooting, spearing or clubbing
the men to death, torturing and raping the women, and roasting Black
infants alive. As historian, James Morris, graphically noted:
"We hear of children kidnapped as pets or servants, of a woman chained
up like an animal in a sheperd's hut, of men castrated to keep them
off their own women. In one foray seventy aborigines were killed, the
men shot, the women and children dragged from crevices in the rocks to
have their brains dashed out. A man called Carrotts, desiring a native
woman, decapitated her husband, hung his head around her neck and

Q fever is a disease caused by infection with Coxiella burnetii, a

the vaginal mucus, milk, feces, urine or semen of infected animals.
The incubation period is 9-40 days. It is considered possibly the most
infectious disease in the world, as a human being can be infected by a
single bacterium.[1]
Biological warfare
The United States investigated Q fever as a potential biological
warfare agent in the 1950s with eventual standardization as agent OU.
At Fort Detrick and Dugway Proving Ground human trials were conducted
on Whitecoat volunteers to determine the median infective dose (18
MICLD50/person i.h.) and course of infection. As a standardized
biological it was manufactured in large quantities at Pine Bluff
Arsenal, with 5,098 gallons in the arsenal in bulk at the time of

Thousands Of British Elite Embrace Islam: Study
LONDON, February 26 (IslamOnline.net) – Jonathan Birt, the son of Lord
Birt and Emma Clark, the granddaughter of former liberal prime
minister Herbert Asquith, are only two of 14,000 mostly-elite white
Britons having reverted to Islam.
In the first authoritative study of the phenomenon, carried by the
Sunday Times on February 22, some of the country’s top landowners,
celebrities and the offspring of senior Establishment figures have
embraced the Muslim faith after being disillusioned with western
values.
The new study by Yahya (formerly Jonathan) Birt, son of Lord Birt,
former director-general of the BBC, provides the first reliable data
on the sensitive subject of the movement of Christians into Islam.
He uses a breakdown of the latest census figures to conclude that
there are now 14,200 white reverts in Britain.
Mass Conversion
Speaking publicly for the first time about his faith this weekend,
Birt argued that an inspirational figure, similar to the American
revert Malcolm X for Afro-Caribbeans, would first have to emerge if
the next stage, a mass conversion among white Britons, were to
happen.
“You need great transitional figures to translate something alien
(like Islam) into the vernacular,” Birt, whose doctorate at Oxford
University is on young British Muslims, was quoted by the Times.
“The image of Islam projected by political Islamic movements is not
very attractive,” he said.
Initially, Birt said he had no coherent reasons for reverting, but “in
the longer term I think it was the overall profundity, balance and
coherence and spirituality of the Muslim way of life which convinced
me,” he said.
‘All Rage’
Meanwhile, it emerged this weekend that Emma Clark, the great-
granddaughter of a British prime minister has reverted.
Emma, whose ancestor, the Liberal prime minister Herbert Asquith, took
Britain into the first world war, said: “We’re all the rage, I hope
it’s not a passing fashion.”
Clark, who helped design an Islamic garden for the Prince of Wales at
Highgrove, his Gloucestershire home, is now helping create a similar
garden for a mosque in Woking, Surrey, on the site of a car park, said
the British newspaper.
Furthermore, fresh evidence came this weekend that Islam has received
formal acceptance at the heart of the Establishment.
The Queen has approved new arrangements to allow Muslim staff at
Buckingham Palace time off to attend Friday prayers at a mosque.
A member of staff in the finance department is the first to take
advantage of it, said the British paper.
‘Trophy Lists’
Others have come to Islam through love or marriage.
Kristiane Backer, a former girlfriend of the cricketer Imran Khan,
said she was introduced to the religion through love but reverted
after her break-up.
She has shrunk from speaking publicly about her religion before
because of fears it might affect her work prospects.
“Imran sowed the seeds, but when (the relationship) finished (the
faith) took on a momentum of its own,” she said.
Drawn to Sufi mysticism, Baker said that white reverts had to overcome
prejudice both from those born into Islam and from non-believers.
“In the mosque women come up and say to me, ‘You have hair showing:
you must cover up completely.’ I say, ‘Mind your own hair, you’re here
to think about God’ ”.
Many reverts have been inspired by the writings of Charles Le Gai
Eaton, a former Foreign Office diplomat, it added.
“I have received letters from people who are put off by the wishy-
washy standards of contemporary Christianity and they are looking for
a religion which does not compromise too much with the modern world,”
said Eaton, author of Islam and the Destiny of Man.
Wary
Some prominent reverts are even more wary, said the Times.
The Earl of Yarborough, 40, who owns a 28,000-acre estate in
Lincolnshire, declined to discuss anything about his faith.
“I have nothing to say to you,” said Yarborough, who has apparently
taken the name Abdul Mateen.
Muslim leaders are harnessing modern campaigning methods to promote
their faith. Groups have sprung up on the internet publishing “trophy
lists” of white reverts.
The state-funded school in London founded by Yusuf Islam, formerly the
singer Cat Stevens, has turned to Premiership footballers to provide
role models, said the Times.
Sources close to the school say reverts including Nicolas Anelka, the
Manchester City striker, and Omer “Freddie” Kanoute, of Tottenham
Hotspur, have made visits.
The trend is being encouraged by Muslim leaders who are convinced that
the conversion of prominent society figures will help protect a
community stigmatized by “terrorism and fundamentalism“.
The Muslim Council of Britain has co-opted Joe Ahmed-Dobson, son of
Frank Dobson, the former health secretary, to chair its regeneration
committee.
“The community has been unfairly targeted and these developments
encourage it in a time of difficulty,” said Zaki Badawi, chairman of
the Imams and Mosques Council

Hijaab is a woman's real beauty

It often occurs to me that many of our sisters in Islam are not
properly encouraged once they begin to observe the requirements of
Hijaab. It may be that a sister has been obliged to wear the Hijaab
without truly pondering over its superiority.
Perhaps she has reached the age of puberty and her parents have
instructed her to wear it. Perhaps she has recently accepted Islam and
her close companions have told her of its obligation. Alternatively,
perhaps her husband has commanded her to wear Hijaab.
A sister who does not truly know the superiority of Hijaab will always
remain envious of disbelieving women. Why? Because they observe these
misguided disbelievers attempting to look beautiful for all to see.
Hence, the Muslim woman then compares herself to that woman which
causes her to feel ashamed of her own Hijaab.
Therefore, what follows is a reminder for my sisters in Islam. It is a
reminder of the true status of these so-called beautiful women. It is
a reminder of the excellence of the women who wear Hijaab.
Excellent Qualities of Those who Wear Hijaab:
It is well known that the Muslim woman is a creature of modesty.
Allaah loves for our Muslim women to be shielded by their Hijaab. It
is their outer protection from the decadence of this life. Allaah's
Messenger , said: "Allaah is modest and covering. He loves modesty
and privacy." [Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa'i Al-Bayhaqi, Ahmad].
Thus, as modesty is a quality that is loved by Allaah, our sisters
must take comfort in knowing that they are modest and that they are
not like those women who show themselves off to the world. Such women
will not be shielded from Allaah's Wrath. Allaah's Messenger said:
"Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband's home,
has broken Allaah's shield upon her." [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi)
Therefore, we see that the Hijaab of the Muslim woman is indeed part
of modesty. Modesty accompanies Eemaan (faith). That is why Allaah's
Messenger said: "Modesty is part of Eemaan and Eemaan is in
Paradise." [At-Tirmithi]. Also: "Modesty and Eemaan are companions,
when one goes away the other one goes away." [Al-Haakim and others]
The Muslim women must know that the disbelieving women who beautify
themselves for the world to see possess no modesty, thus, they are
void of any Eemaan. Instead of looking to the latest fashion models
for guidance, you must look to the wives of the Prophet .
Look at the regard for modesty that our mother, 'Aa'ishah possessed
even in the presence of the deceased; she said: "I used to enter the
room where the Messenger of Allaah and my father (Abu Bakr) were
later buried in without having my garment on me, saying it is only my
husband and my father. But when 'Umar bin al-Khattaab was later
buried in (the same place), I did not enter the room except that I had
my garment on being shy from 'Umar."
It can be quite difficult for the Muslim woman to go out wearing
Hijaab in a society that mocks and torments her. Indeed, she may feel
strange and out of place. However, if she knows the status of those
who are mocked by the disbelievers, then she would continue to wear
her Hijaab with dignity.
Allaah Says in His Book (what means): "Verily! The criminals used to
laugh at those who believed. And whenever they passed them, used to
wink at one another. And when they returned to their own people, they
would return jesting. When they saw them, they said: 'These have
indeed gone astray!' But they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been
sent as watchers over them (the believers). But on this Day those who
believe will laugh at the disbelievers. On (high) thrones, looking (at
all things). Are not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used
to do?"
[Quran 83:29-36]
Allaah's Words should serve as a support for you my dear sister. Also,
take comfort in being a stranger among these lewd and sinful women.
Allaah's Messenger said (what means): "Islam began as something
strange, and it would revert to its (old position) of being strange,
so good news is for the strangers." [Muslim]
The Characteristics of the Exposed Women:
Instead of practicing the Hijaab (covering), the disbelieving women
expose themselves, making a dazzling display of themselves for others.
Such a display is an attribute of ignorance. Allaah Says in His Book
(what means): "And stay in your houses and do not display yourselves
as you used to during the times of ignorance." [Quran 33:33]
Allaah's Messenger said: "The best of your women is the affectionate,
the fertile, the comforting, the agreeable -- if they fear Allaah. The
most evil of your women are those who expose and display themselves,
and those who strut (to show off) and they are the hypocrites. Those
who enter al-Jannah (the Paradise) are like the red beaked crow." [Al-
Bayhaqi]. The simile of the red-beaked crow is to show that those who
enter Paradise will be as rare as this kind crow is rare.
We see from the above Aayah and Hadeeth that displaying oneself is
indeed unlawful. Further, it is a quality of the most evil of women!
Therefore, do not be envious of the disbelieving women. They only have
this life to enjoy, while the believing women will have Paradise.
There is nothing in your Hijaab to be ashamed of, as it is the garment
of the righteous and pious female worshippers of Allaah.
In order to truly show you how evil those women who expose themselves
are, let us ponder over the following statement of Allaah's
Messenger : "Of the people of Hell there are two whom I have never
seen, the one possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog
people with them. The second one, women who would be naked in spite of
their being dressed, who are seduced (to wrong paths) and seduce
others. Their hair is high like the humps of the camel. These women
would not enter Paradise, nor will they smell its fragrance, although
its fragrance can be sensed from such and such a distance." [Muslim]
These women who expose themselves are common among us today. These are
women that even the Prophet did not see! Look around you and you will
see those women who are clothed but naked! Look at the hairstyles of
the women who expose themselves -- are they not high like the camel's
hump?
Perhaps we are the first generation since the time of Aadam to
witness such women. If one ponders over photos taken thirty to fifty
years ago, one will see that the disbelieving women did not expose
themselves in the manner that their offspring do today! These women
are among the people of the Fire! Thus, how can you envy them?
Such lewd women will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise; so our
women must avoid their path.
Another lesson from the above hadeeth is that it confirms that what
the Prophet , came with is indeed the truth! This is a prophecy that
has come to pass in front of our very eyes. Hence, will we continue to
envy these evil women, or should we be grateful to our Lord for the
Hijaab, which brings modesty, which leads to Paradise?
To sum up, the Muslim woman should abandon all of the ways of the
exposed women, and adopt the ways of those who are modest through
their love and practice of the proper Islamic Hijaab.
